17. The Spirit revealing truth

As sons of God we have opportunity of letting the Spirit reveal truths which are hidden for us….interacting with the Holy Spirit ...who is our teacher.

The context of this is NEVER to contradict with what God HAS spoken to us in Jesus (Heb 1:2)....and will be what is taught by the apostles doctrine (Acts 2:42). Revelations which are 'extra biblical' are usually the starting point for CULTS!

John 14:16-17

16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever —   17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.    NKJV

John 15:26

"But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.    NKJV

John 16:12-15

12 "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.  13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth ; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.  14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.   NKJV

1 John 2:26-27

26 These things I have written to you concerning those who try to deceive you. 27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.   NKJV

The purpose of the Holy Spirit is to REVEAL JESUS to us.....and to empower us not to be deceived! Truth is that which God has included for us in His Word.

When something is preached which seems wrong or leaves you feeling uncomfortable and uneasy inside all you have to do is ASK God to show you the truth.  This will not come as a 'warm and fuzzy feeling'......or a 'burning in the bosom'. It will come from a revelation of the truth in God's word.....the scriptures. (correctly interpreted and in context.....and inline with other confirming passages)

The Spirit of Truth will also reveal that which is to come. (eg the book of Revelations....or even the famine at Jeruslem in the time of the early church as prophesied by Agabus in Acts) The test of whether a 'revelation' is from God is whether it comes to pass!

Being led into truth by the Spirit can be by dreams and visions....by audible words....and by illuminated scriptures....or even by 'revelation'...ie simply knowing something!

Simple keys

Listen to the scriptures being read aloud.....see yourself as one to whom it was spoken by Jesus ('Mary sat at Jesus feet').....or perhaps as a disciple in the early church listening to one of the epistles being read out.

then prayerfully meditate on what was said.....allow yourself to picture what was said....interact with it....seek to understand how it applies....and ask questions of God

Then

LISTEN for questions…God's way of opening a truth to us is often to answer a question with another question which may even seem unrelated. This was a technique Jesus often used.

then answer with what comes from within you…ask if you are right…listen for follow-up questions….and keep going until the ‘light goes on’

The Spirit frequently uses other scriptures which will bring clarity and context.

Scriptural examples

Note how Ananias interacted with the Spirit of God.......Acts 9:10

A call...."Ananias".....a response ..."Yes Lord"....he knew who it was speaking to him....Do you know the voice of the Spirit of God?

An instruction...."Go to the house....and ask for....".

A question....God wants us to be sure that we think we are hearing is right!......."Lord I have heard many reports"

A further instruction...."GO this man is my chosen instrument...."

The response......"Then Ananias went to the house...."

AND the situation unfolded just as God said it would!

other examples

Phillip and the Ethiopian

Peter at the house of Simon the tanner before going to Cornelius

Paul when he was warned to flee Jerusalem

Peter's escape from prison

Some of my experiences of interaction about the scriptures

Over many years I had wondered what Jesus meant by the following phrase

Luke 17:37

So He said to them, "Wherever the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered together."      NKJV

One day as I listened to this being read on CD I suddenly heard the question....it was not a thought....it came 'out of the blue'

"What is a carcass?".....this is an invitation to interact.....I knew what to answer......'a body without life'

"What is the body with life".....again the answer was clear....'the church'

"What is the body without life"....again I knew this from within...'the Jewish religious institution'...the 'Ark of the Covenant' is gone!

"Who are the eagles"....again.....'those who are preying on and persecuting Israel'

A while ago I asked the Spirit of God what Jesus  meant when by the following scripture

John 8:56
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad."     NKJV

I heard the question which opened this truth

"Is Abraham dead?"....immediately 3 scriptures came to me

Matt 22:32
32 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.  NKJV

John 8:58

"Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM."      NKJV

John 11:25-26

25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.  26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?"    NKJV

Brethren, Abraham was alive and waiting for the revelation of Jesus ....which came when John baptised him

John 1:29-34

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is He of whom I said, 'After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.' 31 I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water."

32 And John bore witness, saying, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. 33 I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' 34 And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God."   NKJV

Abraham had been waiting for this day since Genesis 22

On another occasion, when wondering how to communicate the truth which a passage clearly contained, I heard the Spirit say... "put yourself as one of the elders into the scene where Paul was addressing them"  (Acts 20:29-35)

This key alone will dismantle much of the deception introduced through 'proof texting' on which most false doctrines are founded.

You will know what Paul was referring to

You will know what Paul meant by the tone he used and the context of the event

You would know Paul himself ...his life and passion

You will know which incidents Paul was quoting from Jesus comments

Brethren each of us is a child of God....we have DIRECT access to God for truth to be revealed to us!

"No longer shall a man teach his brother saying 'know the Lord' for they shall ALL know me"    Heb 8:11
