7. Saved, 'Born Again' & Righteous
SALVATION
Heb – yeshuah } deliverance from evil
Gk – soterion }
Matt 1:21
21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins." NKJV
The theological meaning goes further than just deliverance from evil ….it includes deliverance into the enjoyment of Gods highest blessings….not only in the world to come but also in the present life
Illustration
Israel in slavery in Egypt People today in slavery to sin and Law
God delivering them thru Moses Jesus being our deliverer
The Law being given The Holy Spirit being given to believers
The promised Land The Kingdom of God/Heaven
- a land of milk and honey - a life of spiritual blessing we did not
- vineyards earn or deserve
- and houses
they did not build (Rom 14:17 righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit)Health and abundant provision Healing and abundant provision
In the Old Testament
Salvation and the blessing of God was achieved by believing in God and obeying the Law fully
Deut 28:1-2
Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the LORD your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. 2 And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the LORD your God: NKJV
Israel’s history thru the bible is of one failure after another….they just could not live up to God’s standards
Acts 15:5
5 But some of the sect of the Pharisees who believed rose up, saying, "It is necessary to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses." NKJV
Acts 15:9-11
10 Now therefore, why do you test God by putting a yoke (vs 5 observing the Law) on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? NKJV
In the New Testament
Matt 11:28-30
28 Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." NKJV
Acts 15:11
11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved in the same manner as they." NKJV
God requires only one thing from us for salvation….He has done the rest in sending Jesus who died for us on the cross and was raised from the dead.
John 3:14-18
…….even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
18 "He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. NKJV
Faith is the only requirement...this is the same as believing....and or trusting.
Eph 2:4-10
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For
by grace (God’s underserved mercy and favour)
you have been saved (NB Past Tense)
through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. NKJV
Other things will follow
Mark 16:16-17
16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. NKJV
Rom 10:8-13
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, "Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame." 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. 13 For "whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved." NKJV
ie a public declaration and confession…(the thief on the cross confessed Jesus as "Lord" ...but was not baptized)
Salvation is expressed through our freedom from the power of sin and darkness and set free to live in the light
Rom 6:17-19
17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. 19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness. NKJV
We are now free to live a godly life….
2 Cor 5:17
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. NKJV
Salvation is not only for getting to heaven when we die….it starts here and now .... and lasts forever!
Heb 5:9
9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, NKJV
Our security is that just as the work of salvation is something which God initiates….so He will too bring it to completion!
REBIRTH – REGENERATION – BORN AGAIN
Gk – palingenesia} to be born again or restored
John 1:12-13
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. NKJV
All that is required is to receive JESUS…to BELIEVE in His name… ie to pray from the heart... ‘Father I believe that Jesus is your Son and I receive Him as my Saviour and believe that you now accept me as your child and in faith I trust you will help me to walk with you, Father I thank you that because I believe that your son Jeus died in my place, that ALL my sins, past present and future, ARE forgiven and I can live my life free of guilt, condemnation and shame’
God will then 'rebirth' us as His children….. it is His work in our spirits by the HOLY SPIRIT bringing new life. If you experience no change, pray again....and again until you know something in you has changed. You will sense in your innner being a light....and new life force....not physical ...but very real. You will also experience a release and a freedom and the peace and joy that this truth brings.
We have to come to GOD for this life (not a church...or a man)....do it in prayer in a room on your own if you want....do it when walking on your own. It is not 'joining a religion' or a denomination....it is joining yourself to GOD himself (1 Cor 6:17). Don't just study about God (John 5:39-40) ...ask HIM to come into your life and lead you by His Holy Spirit. Step into the 'realm of the Spirit'
John 3:1-8
1 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him."
3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
4 Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?"
5 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So Is everyone who is born of the Spirit." NKJV
NOTE: Jesus was astounded that Nicodemus ...a very religious and genuine Jewish ruler...did not know about this. Have you ever asked why? Sadly many 'religious' people today also do not know this truth in their lives.
Many today still never get beyond church affilliation and religious observances INTO a personal relationship with God
What is the process to getting this?
We listen to Gods word or preaching ...especially the GOSPEL of the Grace of God extended towards us in Christ.
Rom 10:17
17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. NKJV
Acts 2:36-39
36 "Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."
37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?"
38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call." NKJV
We need to come to a place where we receive a revelation of who Jesus IS....God himself manifested to us.
John 16:7-11
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper (the Holy Spirit) will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. NKJV
Rom 1:16-17
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; NKJV
The Spirit of God works when we come to Jesus in faith ... in response to the message of the GOSPEL
Titus 3:3-7
4 But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, 5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. NKJV
We were dead…but are empowered by the Spirit of God to respond
Eph 2:1
1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins,
…….
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, NKJV
John 5:21-22
21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will. NKJV
1 John 5:1-2
Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. NKJV
1 John 5:3-4
4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world — our faith. NKJV
2 Cor 5:16-17
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. NKJV
Rom 6:4
4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. NKJV
1 Peter 1:1-5
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
NKJV
1 Peter 1:22-23
23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever NKJV
When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour in FAITH a new life is born within us ……it is the work of the Holy Spirit who comes to live in us….and suddenly we become aware of the reality of our Father God….and His great love for us
We are effectively ‘under new management’….our hearts are drawn by God into a new walk ...one with Him.
This is something which cannot be adequately explained in natural terms….but when it is experienced the life changing work of God cannot be denied!
We become aware of the realm of the Spirit....the Kingdom of God.....the realm where we can interact with Him!
REDEMPTION
Heb – paraq } to tear loose
Gk – lytron } a ransom
The judicial and commercial act of God by which he purchases our lives and freedom for the price of His Son's death on our behalf
Redemption is from the Law, the consequences of sin and from the power of Satan TO the freedom of a relationship with God as our Father and a new life in Christ
Titus 2:13-14
13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. NKJV
Gal 3:13-14
13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. NKJV
John 8:34-36
34 Jesus answered them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. NKJV
Rom 3:22-26
For there is no difference; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness ………. that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. NKJV
1 Cor 6:19-20
20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's. NKJV
1 Peter 1:18-19
18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. NKJV
Rev 5:9
"You are worthy to take the scroll,
And to open its seals;
For You were slain,
And have redeemed us to God by Your blood NKJV
The questions to ask ourselves is not ‘How can God forgive me?’ But rather ....
‘Is there any way God would reject Jesus as an acceptable sacrifice for me?’
Heb 9:11-15
But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. 12 Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? NKJV
Redemption is NOT temporary…it is ETERNAL!
Heb 10:11-14
And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, 13 from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. 14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. NKJV
Isa 53:4-5
4 Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed. NKJV
Jesus paid he full price for ALL our sins (past, present and future) on the cross at Calvary!
What do we do if we fall?
Heb 4:15-16
15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. NKJV
Rom 5:8-10
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. 10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. NKJV
Many Christians live with a sense of God still being angry with them and holding their sins against them. This is a lie from Hell…..would God ever reject His Son Jesus?.....or say that the price paid was not sufficient?
What do we have to do?
2 Cor 5:20-21
20 Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God. 21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. KJV
Just share the incredible love of God with people when we can
RIGHTEOUSNESS
Heb – tsaddiq } the quality of rightness especially with God
Gk – dikaiosyne}
God has always desired to have a relationship with man….and man has blown it because of his choices….and God has always had a plan to make this possible again
ie Adam and Eve….God offered them the ‘tree of life’…but they choose the ‘tree of the knowledge of good and evil’ because of Satan’s temptation. God then cursed Satan and promised a seed (redeemer) who would crush the serpents head.
ie Israel rejected God after being delivered from Egypt by mighty miracles thru Moses hand….they still chose to worship a golden calf rather than the Living God. God put in place a system of sacrifices and offerings for restoration.
Mans pride and his desire to be equal to and/or independent of God have been at the core of his failure. Evolution is the prime expression in today’s world that proves nothing has changed. Unregenerate mankind still does not want to acknowledge God as creator and rejects His offer of the ‘tree of life’….Jesus …pursuing their own meaningless self-righteousness…… ‘I did it my way!’
Rom 1:20-22
20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, NKJV
God’s way alone can be the source of true righteousness
Under Law of Moses God put up a set of rules for Israel to live by so as to test their hearts…. and right through the rest of the old Testament they continued to fail time after time!
Deut 6:24-25
4 And the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as it is this day. 25 Then it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to observe all these commandments before the LORD our God, as He has commanded us.' NKJV
Deut 28:1-2
"Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the LORD your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. 2 And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the LORD your God: NKJV
To live up to God’s standards required complete obedience to all His Laws all the time…..something man could never do!
So what was God’s purpose in bringing the Law……
It was to humble man and to bring him to the place where he realized that by his own works and of himself he could never be right with God. He needed God’s help!
Rom 3:19-20
19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin. NKJV
Rom 4:14-15
15 because the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression. NKJV
It was to bring Israel to the place where in humility they would seek his mercy and accept His salvation…not stand proudly before Him in their own/self-righteousness
Luke 18:9-14
Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank You that I am not like other men — extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.' 13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." NKJV
The religious spirit in man is an abomination in the eyes of God……it says.... ‘I am good enough in my own right! I don’t need Jesus to be a sacrifice for me'
The religious Jews rejected their own promised Messiah in favor of their own traditions and self-righteousness and religious system
So God showed us the New Covenant way
Luke 18:16-17
16 But Jesus called them to Him and said, "Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God. 17 Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it." NKJV
Isa 64:6
6 But we are all like an unclean thing,
And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; NKJV
Paul saw it clearly dismissing all his own self-righteousness...in return for God's righteousness
Phil 3:8-9
8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; NKJV
The righteousness that God offers is total and perfect…..because it doesn’t depend on our doing…….simply our trusting God that the work of Jesus and His death is acceptable to the Father for the restoration of relationship
Matt 1:20-21
"Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins." NKJV
Rom 1:17
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "The just shall live by faith." NKJV
1 Cor 1:27-31
27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28 and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 29 that no flesh should glory in His presence. 30 But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God — and righteousness and sanctification and redemption — 31 that, as it is written, "He who glories, let him glory in the LORD." NKJV
2 Cor 5:20-21
20 Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God. 21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. NKJV
How do we get it?…it is by faith and faith only….from first to last…..never dependant on us or our works. It is IMPUTED by God to us when we humble ourselves and believe in Jesus
John 3:14-18
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
NKJV
(There are at least 20 other references in John’s gospel that confirm that simply believing is what God desires of us)
John 14:6
6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. NKJV
Put your life in Jesus hands and you are totally 100% right with God…..irrespective of whether you may fall or not obey all the time because Jesus never fell or disobeyed and HE IS YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS
It is not dependant on us being good enough because none of us ever will be!….. it is therefore given to us as a gift
Rom 5:17
7 For if by the one man's offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the GIFT of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ. NKJV
Rom 3:21-24
But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus NKJV
As in Leviticus the priest would examine the lamb to see it was without blemish…rather than the sinners……..so God only looks at the work of Jesus rather than the state of our lives
Righteousness from God means that irrespective of our state (current condition), God sees our status (our eternal position in Christ) as perfect
NKJV
We must come to the place where we stop asking ‘How could God possibly accept me?’….and ask instead….’Can I see the Father ever rejecting JESUS?’
Eph 1:3-6
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved NKJV
RIGHTEOUSNESS IS BELIEVING IN JESUS RATHER THAN RELYING ON OUR OWN MERITS
This is why it is called ‘Good News’…..our righteousness is free gift when we believe in Jesus because Jesus paid for it on our behalf
